Blue Moscow mule

Blue Moscow mule is a bold and blue classic with a twist. The blue colour with a hint of green basil peeking out of the copper mug is a real eye-catcher. Make a toast with a blue Moscow mule on a special occasion and this moment will stay with you forever.

Summer is apparently back. Hmm, I was somehow waiting for that. Wink. The timing is perfect for a colourful cocktail, blue as the summer sky. I am talking about blue Moskow mule. I am sure you all know the regular Moscow mule cocktail, right? At least you’ve heard of it.

And what are the important points when making Moscow mule? Firstly, the ingredients are simple yet a perfect combination. Vodka, ginger beer and lime juice are the classic combo for this kind of a cocktail. When picking the ingredients (alcohol and sodas in this case) always go for a good one. Therefore, grab a good quality Vodka, such as Grey Goose or Belvedere.

Secondly, use fresh lime juice. It’s so simple. Buy some limes, roll them on the counter by slightly pressing on them, cut and squeeze. Always use fresh citrus fruits. Lime juice helps balance the sweetness of the ginger beer. I love lime and its lovely bright green colour, the sour and fresh flavour and the versatility. Not only is it good in dishes such as chili lime chicken, a delicious avocado lime tart or fresh avocado salmon ceviche but some cocktails would simply be a total fail without lime juice.

Thirdly, in order to get some bubbles in your drink, try ginger beer. Ginger beer is basically a soft drink. And, if you love a bit tangy and sweet flavour, then the ginger beer is the right choice. You can go for ginger ale, too. However, it has a milder taste but more bubbles.

Last but not least, it is essential to serve it in a copper mug. I love those mugs. In fact, if you have a chance to buy one, do it. Moreover, the copper mugs don’t only look good but they also insulate the temperature of the chilled ginger beer. As a result, they keep the cocktail cool for a longer time. Additionally, some copper mugs experts say that it enhances the flavours, too.

Furthermore, I had to get a blue colour from somewhere. Maybe you guessed already, I used Blue Curaçao. This is a flavoured syrup made with the dried peel of bitter citrus fruit and obviously some blue colouring. Blue Curaçao is mostly used to give that lovely blue note to the cocktails. For another blue cocktail, jump to the Jack Frost cocktail, which I made last NYE’s.

And one last word about ice. The cocktail asks for crushed ice. In my previous cocktail recipe, I explained how I made clear ice at home. The reason I am telling you this is because I used clear and cloudy crushed ice in this cocktail. Cloudy ice makes a great visual effect when mixed with Blue Curaçao and the clear ice melts slow.

Ingredients for one blue Moscow mule:

  • 30 ml fresh lime juice
  • 60 ml Vodka (Grey Goose or Belvedere)
  • 20 ml Blue Curaçao
  • 90 ml Ginger beer (chilled)
  • crushed ice (cloudy or/and clear)
  • 8-10 slightly frozen blueberries
  • 1 lime slice (garnish)
  • basil (garnish)

To begin, prepare your copper mug (that’s a must-have when making Moscow mule). Firstly, add the crushed ice and pour in the fresh lime juice (which you just squeezed). Secondly, add the vodka and Blue Curaçao and top with the sparkling and chilled ginger beer.

Enjoy!
