Canned tuna ceviche

Canned tuna ceviche

What is ceviche? It is a simple raw fish or seafood based dish marinated in citrus juices and spiced up with chili peppers. An amazing fresh dish where no cooking or cooking skills are involved. Ceviche has to be eaten cold. Basically you “cook” it in the fridge. There is no need to buy a tuna steak to make a tuna ceviche. You can create an amazing variation using an ordinary canned tuna. And whoever says canned tuna isn’t good, well my dear, you will be amazed how good it can be.

I added cilantro and onion, which are also common to use. This recipe serves 2 as for lunch or 4 as appetizers.

Ingredients for tuna ceviche:

  • 1 plum tomato
  • 1 yellow or red onion (small)
  • 2 Tbsp of olive oil
  • 2 spring onions
  • 1 lime
  • 1 mandarin
  • coriander (chopped ca 2 Tbsp)
  • 150 g of canned tuna (drained)
  • 1 chili (no seeds)
  • salt and pepper
  • ½ avocado

You can make this a couple of hours in advance. It can be easily kept in the fridge. Just remember to cover it with foil so that the onion smell doesn’t stick to everything in the fridge.

All you need to prepare is a bowl, a knife and a spoon. Now, peel and finely chop the onion. Combine it in the bowl together with the juice of one lime and one mandarin, salt, pepper and olive oil. Give it a quick stir. Lime and mandarin juices will nicely reduce the intensity of the onion.

Next, drain the all the excess water from the tuna and mix the tuna into the bowl. Also add the chopped cilantro, diced tomato and finely sliced chili pepper. Season as needed. Cover everything with the transparent foil and put in the fridge for ca 20 minutes. Consequently, all the ingredients will come together giving an amazing flavour to the dish.

Serve this simple tuna ceviche dish cold. You can serve it for lunch or dinner, appetizer or snack. Or just because you want it.

I used a small Tupperware to get the round form of the ceviche. Place the transparent foil into the Tupperware and fill it with the tuna ceviche. Using a spoon press the mixture so that it will stay compact in the form. Place a plate on top of it, flip them and remove the Tupperware and the foil.

In conclusion, top with some slices of the creamy avocado to complement the tuna ceviche flavour.

Enjoy!
