A delicious comforting dish made with soft waffles, crispy double-breaded chicken, salty bacon and maple syrup as topping.

Maple syrup chicken waffles

Check out this indulgent combination of flavours. Maple syrup chicken waffles are one of the most satisfying meals. Crunchy chicken and bacon over a soft waffle drizzled with some maple syrup, make the ultimate sweet and savoury combo.

I bet you have your waffles mostly for breakfast. Right? For instance, as the most classic topping, you pair it with honey, jam, fruits or anything sweet. Have you tried them with some savoury food? Oh, fabulous. You have to give it a try. Sweet and savoury is a genius combo.

Furthermore, do you make waffles at home? Or do you buy them, like I do? I don’t own a waffle iron. As a matter of fact, I don’t have any space for it in my tiny kitchen. Therefore, I buy the waffles, but very rarely. I can say that the store-bought waffles taste good. However, if you have a waffle iron at home, making fresh waffles is a must. Wink.

But the question is: do chicken, syrup, and waffles go together?

If you live in the USA you probably already know the answer. But for the rest of you, you just found an amazing comforting meal. Chicken, syrup, and waffles might seem like an unusual combination at first. However, this trio is the foundation of a beloved dish known as chicken and waffles. This pan-fried crispy chicken with bacon and soft waffles will satisfy all your cravings. For an extra crunch, bread your chicken twice. Yes, double crumb! Yummy. And, you don’t need to fry your chicken in pots filled with oil. A little drizzle in a pan is enough. You just need to keep an eye on it and turn it frequently, to brown all the sides equally.

Last but not least, pimp your chicken up with some crispy bacon, fresh spring onions and a lot of maple syrup. This dish is just like dreams come true. Wink. Make sure you get a piece of everything with every bite, as the absolute blend of flavours is what makes this dish so amazing.

In short, the answer to the question above is yes. Yes, chicken, syrup and waffles do go together. I always love to play with flavours and textures and this dish is just perfect for it. Crispy chicken, soft waffle, sticky syrup, salty bacon and fresh onion. Yummy. Have it for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. It’s always the perfect time to enjoy it.

If you’d like to check some other comforting recipes, I have a couple of my favourites: sunny side up burger, sweet kaiserschmarrn, the classic tagliatelle al ragu alla bolognese or these honey figs cheese stuffed mushrooms.

Additionally, if you want another extra feature in the same dish, add some fresh chili. Simply delicious.

Ingredients for 3-4 portions of maple syrup chicken waffles:

  • 6 smaller waffles (storebought)
  • 600 g chicken (boneless; filet or breast)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tbsp of milk
  • a pinch of salt
  • 2 Tbsp of flour
  • 6 Tbsp of bread crumbs (or more if needed)
  • 150 g bacon cubes
  • 2 spring onions
  • maple syrup

To begin, bread the chicken. Prepare two small bowls for flour and egg-milk mix and one middle bowl for breadcrumbs. It goes in this order: gently press the chicken, one by one, into the flour, then dip it into the egg-milk mixture and add it to the breadcrumbs. Cover with breadcrumbs and press to coat each piece completely. Dip it again in the egg and cover with breadcrumbs one more time.

In a pan, drizzle some oil. Once hot, add the chicken. Brown it on all sides until golden brown.

At the same time, add the bacon cubes to a smaller pan and cook them until crispy. Transfer them onto some paper towels to absorb the extra fat. Trim, wash and slice the spring onions.

Preheat the oven to 180°C. A couple of minutes before the chicken is ready, place the waffles in the oven until a bit crispy.

Finally, it is time to plate these maple syrup chicken waffles. Arrange the waffles onto the plates, and top them with bacon, chicken and spring onions. Finish with a generous drizzle of maple syrup.

Enjoy.
