Cutte puff-pastry mummies with mayo eyes.

Mummies

Happy Halloween! Check out these wonderful and spooky snacks. Mummies are one of the cutest snacks you can prepare for Halloween. They are easy and quick to make. All you need is a sausage wrapped in some puff pastry. To bring it to life, create scared-looking yet funny eyes and you are ready to party.

October is here, nature is changing its clothes, people wearing puffy jackets, hot chocolate is back on the menu and there is a “party” at the end of the month. Sounds like winter to me, only in different colours, ending with Halloween, not with the fireworks.

Moreover, if you are celebrating it or not you know what it is about; costume parties, spooky things, pumpkins, sweets and horror films. I am about to show you how to make the mummies.

As mentioned before, you’ll need puff-pastry dough. I simply bought one roll at the supermarket. In order to prevent the roll from breaking, take it out of the fridge five minutes before unrolling it.

Normal hot-dog sausages wraped in puff-pastry make some spooky mummies. Mayo and pepper corn are used to make the eyes.
How to transform a sausage in a spooky Halloween treat?

Furthermore, you can use either long, normal or short sausages. I find normal ones are great for this Halloween snack. However, with the mini sausages, you can create a lot more of these cute mini snacks.

Also, check these cute snacks; pink devilled eggs, a vibrant and spooky cranberry punch, almost real sweet cigarettes and sweet finger cookies.

Ingredients for about 12 mummies:

  • 1 roll of puff pastry dough
  • 12 sausages
  • mayonnaise
  • 24 black peppercorns
  • ketchup

Take the dough out of the fridge and unroll it. Now, take a sharp knife and cut it into strips crosswise. Try to cut the dough in about 2 cm wide stripes. It also depends on how many sausages are you going to use. Twelve sausages mean twelve stripes. By the way, I still got some puff pastry left (for about 5 more mummies).

In addition, if you are wondering, why I said twelve sausages but you only see eleven in the photo; well, I ate one. I couldn’t resist. Wink.

Mummies made out of sausage wrapped in puff-pastry, ketchup for the blood effect, mayo for the eyes.
Ketchup and sausage go always together. Also as a spooky blood effect.

At this point, drizzle some ketchup (in a zig-zag pattern) across the dough. Doesn’t need to be much. The ketchup will give the impression of the blood coming out between the “linen cloth”, which in our case is puff pastry. Wink.

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Consequently, the dough will start rising in the shape you want.

Furthermore, take a sausage, place it on a stripe at a 45° angle and roll it in the dough. At 3/4 of the sausage leave a small part of the sausage uncovered, but continue to roll the stripe around the sausage, until the end. As a result, the uncovered sausage will be used as the face of the mummy. Use a drop of water to glue the dough together.

After the last sausage is wrapped, place the mummies on a baking tray covered with baking paper and put them in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Use mayo and black peppercorns to create these cute big eyes.

Afterwards, take the tray out, remove the mummies together with the whole paper (pull it on a cutting board) and leave them to cool down. Then, use the mayonnaise to create the eyes (just squeeze a “dot” of it ) and the peppercorns to create the pupils. Aren’t they cute?

Spooky and funny snacks are done. Finally, serve the mummies with some dip and don’t forget the napkins too. Your friends will love them. Moreover, mummies are perfect for a birthday party as well.

Enjoy and happy Halloween!
