Sausage party skewers.

Sausage party skewers

Since I’ve done the “Currywurst tour” I got new ideas how to use the sausages (by sausages I mean hot-dog/Vienna sausages). What do you think of this sausage party skewers recipe? Combined with zucchini and carrots strips it looks just fantastic!

Maybe the ingredients are not so special, but the way they are stuffed on the wooden skewer is a little different from the usual. Carrots, zucchini and sausage get first on the skewers, then grilled and then cut.

This sausage party skewers recipe asks for only three ingredients. Let’s admit it; making skewers is easy and quick. Anyone can do it. Therefore, along with them, I decided to make some delicious homemade aioli sauce. It’s quick to prepare and tastes like “garlicked” heaven. Hehehe.

Ingredients for two portions of sausage party skewers:

  • 4 sausages (Vienna sausages)
  • 1 medium to big zucchini
  • 2 carrots
  • olive oil
  • salt and pepper
  • rosemary

Ingredients for aioli sauce:

  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 egg yolk
  • salt and pepper
  • ½ lemon or lime (juice)
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 100 ml olive oil

Do you have three minutes to spare? Yes? Let’s make the aioli sauce. Using an immersion blender blend together thinly chopped garlic, egg yolk, salt, pepper, lemon juice and honey. After blending it for 30 seconds, start adding (a little at a time) the olive oil. When you used all of the oil, continue to blend until silky and thick. Mmmmm, can you sense the freshness of the lemon and garlic? Delicious! Put it in a small jar. You can keep it in the fridge for about four days. Well, I can’t say exactly, because it never lasts more than a day in this house. Hehehe.

Next step, wash the zucchini and the carrots. Cut off the ends and with a potato peeler make long slices; trying not to break them. Once you have all the slices ready and in front of you, start stacking them on top of each other by alternating the colours. Two things to keep in mind; try to make them long like the sausage and make combos of five layers.

If the carrot or zucchini slice isn’t as long as the sausage, simply overlap with another slice. I made combos of 3 zucchini and 2 carrot layers, but you can also make it any order you like. You can put some rosemary for an extra aroma in between the slices. You will need five combos like that. What to do with the remaining slices? Simply use them to make a colourful salad.

How to make these sausage party skewers:

Now, prepare four wooden skewers and four sausages. This part can be a little tricky, but nothing is so difficult that it can’t be done, right? Right. Place one veggie combo vertically in front of you and place one sausage on top of it. Now flip them so they won’t lay flat on the surface anymore. Keep holding them with one hand. Place the next veggie combo on the other side of the sausage. It should be turned the same way as the other combo that you are holding. Then add another sausage, followed by another combo and so on. You should start and finish with a veggie combo.

Keep holding everything together with one hand. Let’s resume; you have four wooden skewers, therefore try to imagine dividing the veggie-sausage creation if front of you in four equal vertical parts. Each skewer is for one part. Let’s say the sausage is 20 cm long then each part would be 5 cm long and each skewer would go in the middle of those 5 cms. Furthermore, quickly take the first wooden skewer and push it through all veggie combos and sausages.

You can ask someone to help you with that, but I know you can do it. The wooden skewer should go through veggies, sausage, veggies, sausage, veggies, sausage, veggies, sausage, veggies. Uhhhh that was a long word repetition. Hehehe. Continue with the remaining wooden skewers until all four are sticking in.

Preheat a non-stick pan. Brush the sausage skewers with some olive oil on both sides. Once the pan gets hot place them in it. After 4 minutes turn them around and leave for another 4 minutes.

Just before serving cut the sausage party skewers following an imaginary line between the wooden skewers. You need to do three cuts in total. Now you have four amazing sausage party skewers and a delicious, homemade aioli sauce on a side.

Enjoy!
