Christmas is behind us, but the holidays are still here. And the next one around the corner is New Year’s Eve. Someone would say, it is the longest night of the year. Are you ready for it? Do you have all your snacks prepared? Just in case, I will show you how to make a great party snack; sausage pastry bites to be exact.
They are super easy and quick to prepare. These sausage pastry bites are also great when you want to switch from the sweet appetizers. Moreover, you only need a few ingredients and an oven to bring these party snacks to your table. And all ingredients are budget friendly.
Another great thing is, you can serve them either cold or warm. If you want to serve them warm, I suggest to prepare everything earlier on the same day and then keep them in the fridge until baking them. Put them to bake 20 minutes before serving them. Yes, that’s how long they need to be ready.
In this recipe, I used three Vienna sausages and I cut them into quarters. Yes, I got 12 pieces. However, if you want more sausage pastry bites, you can either cut them into smaller pieces or use double the amount of ingredients.
Ingredients for 12 sausage pastry bites:
- 2-3 carrots
- half an orange (juice)
- a roll of puff pastry dough
- 3 sausages ( Vienna sausage)
- 3 tsp Parmesan cheese
- sesame seeds
- olive oil
- fig- mustard (optional)
Start with washing and peeling the carrots. Using a potato peeler, make thin and long carrot slices. Keep them in a bowl and add some fresh orange juice to them. This will prevent them from turning dark and help to keep the nice orange colour.
Preheat the oven at 180º C.
Next step, roll out the puff pastry dough and cut it (crosswise) in three equal pieces. Sprinkle the dough with some cheese and place the carrot slices (again crosswise), slightly overlapping, on the dough. Then place a sausage on top (lengthwise) and roll it until sealed. You can slightly wet the border of the dough with a drop of water to make the dough stick better.
Repeat the same steps with the remaining dough, carrots and sausages. Next, cut each roll into four equal pieces and place them (sausage side up) on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Furthermore, brush the dough with some olive oil and sprinkle it with sesame seeds.
Put to bake for 20 minutes or until golden-brown and puffy.
Finally, the sausage pastry bites are ready! I suggest serving them with some sweet fig-mustard or some sour cream with a touch of horseradish. Enjoy this party snack either warm or cold through the longest night of the year.
Happy New Year!
