The Tornado potato

How do you like your potatoes to be done? Fried, mashed or baked? I like all, but there is also a different and fun way to prepare them. This tornado potatoes are easy to make and they will add a nice touch to your plate. Or in this case, you can skip the plate. You can simply hold them in your hand. You will make a great impression on your friends when they come over for lunch, for a party or for a BBQ. Here we go. No special skills needed.

The ingredients for the cool tornado potatoes (for 2 persons):

  • 4 potatoes (medium size)
  • 2 tsp of Ghee or butter
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 2 tsp of red sweet paprika
  • salt and pepper
  • 4 wooden skewers (soaked in water for 10 minutes)

Wash the potatoes. Take the wooden skewers and push one skewer in each potato (lengthwise). Do it slowly, little by little. Do not hold the skewer at the end, because it will break. Hold it ca 3 cm from the potato. Sometimes it is not so easy to get through the potato. I help myself by placing the potato on a small glass (shot glass). Like that it is easier to push the skewer down through the potato. But you will find your own way how to do it.

Now, that all the potatoes are on the wooden sticks, it is time to cut. Take a sharp knife, place it on the end of the potato at around a 30° angle and cut towards the other end while turning the skewered potato. Turning the potato makes it easier to cut it. Try to make the slices not too thick, max 5mm. Then gently spread out the slices and try to leave an even gap between them. Now you have a spiral on a stick, that will soon become a tornado.

Preheat the oven to 180º C. Place a baking paper on a baking tray. Melt the Ghee or normal butter and spread it with a brush all over the potatoes and rest them on the tray. In a small bowl combine the red paprika, finely chopped garlic, salt and pepper. Sprinkle the mixture over the potatoes. It doesn’t need to look nice. Tornados make a mess anyway. Put in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden-brown. I turned them once in between.

Serve them warm. Maybe with some dip, sausage or veggies. I served it with some steamed spinach with fresh chili.

Enjoy!
