Vegan golden milk

Creamy, delicious and healthy vegan golden milk can be made in only 5 minutes. It’s a treat to enjoy on its own or paired with a small sweet snack. This golden milk is made of coconut milk, turmeric, ginger, black pepper and cinnamon, which makes it rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

As I said in my previous recipe (check it out: blueberry arugula salad), spring is amazing for creating fresh dishes. However, because of the constant weather changes (cold nights, warm days), we have to protect ourselves from viruses. In other words, our body was in winter-sleep modus, in a bubble protected from cold. And now, our body is bubble-free and it wants to fly, jump around and enjoy the sunny days. Therefore, we need a super-boost drink.

Here is a one-pot recipe on how to make turmeric-ginger-infused, vegan golden milk. I just love this recipe. It’s so easy and very quick to prepare, yet, it’s a real boost for your immune system. The Indian people in Ayurveda (the birthplace of the drink) know what they are doing.

Of course, you can take a shot of ginger juice or a honey-turmeric shot. But, a cup of creamy warm vegan golden milk goes way beyond that. I love it. After every sip, I make also a noise “mmmm”. Wink.

The best thing about this recipe is, you can find all the ingredients at almost every supermarket. I like to use fresh ginger because I think it has more power, more flavour. And for the same reason, I like to use turmeric powder instead of the fresh one. Having said that, probably, you can find an already-made mixture as well. But I still prefer making it fresh.

Turmeric – a super spice

I am quite sure you are all familiar with the ingredients. But I need to say one more time how super healthy and good for you turmeric is. Turmeric is an incredible spice. Being rich in antioxidants and as a potent anti-inflammatory, it has many health benefits.

For instance, it helps improve symptoms of joint pain, depression, breathing problems, but also it helps prevent cancer and heart disease. All of this thanks to the main active ingredient, curcumin. Oh, and when you are asking yourself, why did I use coconut oil in a drink: let me tell you, that coconut oil allows to absorb curcumin easily and fast.

Curcumin keeps you healthy.

In addition, besides for this lovely recipe, I use turmeric quite often. Why? It gives a great flavour, a lovely colour to the dish and, as I said above, it makes our body healthier. Therefore, if you are curious in more recipes with turmeric, you can check these out: an exotic banana turmeric chicken, a creamy potato curcuma soup, super cute curcuma beetroot pancakes, a healthy cauliflower spinach soup or the delicious Cape chicken curry.

Mostly, I enjoy a cup of golden milk in the evening, when sitting on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket, watching a movie. Yummy. Additionally, paired with a sweet treat it also makes a wonderful breakfast or lunch.

For example, you can serve it along with a lovely apple tart, with a piece of fruit cake (ok, this is more of a Christmas idea), maybe with a slice of blueberry cheesecake or a slice of super fluffy Japanese cotton cheesecake. I wonder how would it taste with a scoop of vanilla icecream.

Ingredients for 2 cups of vegan golden milk:

  • 400 ml coconut milk (canned)
  • 100 ml oat milk
  • 4 tsp ground turmeric
  • 2 tsp fresh grated ginger (or 1/4 tsp ground ginger)
  • 2 tsp coconut oil
  • 1 cinnamon stick or 1/4 ground cinnamon
  • a pinch of black pepper
  • 1-2 tsp of sweetener (date syrup, coconut sugar, agave nectar or maple syrup)

First, peel and grate a piece of ginger. Then, combine everything in a pot, by adding first the liquid ingredients and then the dry ones. Cook on medium heat, with continuous stirring, for 5 minutes. When it’s warm, it’s ready. Don’t bring it to boil.

This is better than any pill.

Furthermore, strain the milk through a sieve with a finer mesh. As a result, you’ll catch all larger pieces of ginger and pepper, that are laying at the bottom of the pot.

Finally, divide the vegan golden milk between two cups and slowly sip it. Mmmmm. Delicious. This is the best medicine for your immune system! You can have a cookie along with it or a small piece of cake, too. But I find it amazing just as it is.

Enjoy!
