Any season can be a skewer season when you make these apple pork sausage skewers right in your kitchen. Wink. Skewers are amazing. Firstly, they are so easy to make. Secondly, there are plenty of variations and combinations. Thirdly, you can pair them with a salad, potatoes or rice.

Pork and apples

As you can see, I kept it quite simple. Pork and apple go together just like peanut butter and jelly. Ha ha ha. In fact, people have been pairing them for centuries, as a sugar substitute. Apples were and are a common way to add a sweet note to pork dishes.

Another fun fact, the acidity of apples helps the digestion of fat meat, just like pork. And a grilled or baked apple taste even sweeter than a raw one. It makes a great combo with salty meat. Delicious.

When picking an apple, make sure you choose a sweet variety that holds its shape when baking. For instance, you can use, Golden Delicious, Jonagold, Fuji or Honeycrisp. If you prefer something else to apples, try these super fun mango sausage skewers.

Sweet onions

Since the ingredients in this recipe are so simple, I marinated the onions. As a result, I reduced the strong onion flavour and at the same time, they become softer and sweeter. It’s a nice trick, that anyone can do.

Ingredients for 5-6 apple pork sausage skewers:

  • 3 pork sausages
  • 1 large apple
  • 2 red onions or 3-4 small shallots
  • 1-2 slices of grilled pickled pepper (store-bought)
  • a third of a cucumber
  • fresh coriander
  • sea salt and pepper
  • olive oil

Ingredients for the marinade:

  • ca 30 ml of olive oil
  • 1 orange (juice)
  • 1 tsp of honey
  • black pepper

To begin, prepare the marinade. Combine the olive oil, the juice of one orange, honey and black pepper in a bowl. Then, peel the onions and halve them. Cut each half into quarters and carefully, without letting them fall apart, place each chunk into a smaller baking dish or bowl with a flat bottom and higher sides. Place them in a single layer and then pour the marinade on top. Allow marinating for 20 minutes.

In the meantime, wash the cucumber and coriander. Slice the cucumber into strips or thin sticks. Cut the grilled pepper into strips, too. Chop some coriander and combine everything in a bowl. Season with salt, add a spoon of oil from the grilled pepper jar, some vinegar or lemon juice and toss to combine.

Skewers

Afterwards, (when the onions have been marinated) prepare the skewers. Preheat the oven to 200° C and prepare a larger oven-proof pan. Wash and cut the apple (skin on) into the same size chunks as the onion. Then, take a skewer and thread the sausage, apple and onion pieces by alternating their sequence. Make 5-6 apple pork sausage skewers.

Drizzle some olive oil into the pan. Once hot, add in the skewers and cook for 5-6 minutes on each side or until golden. At this point, transfer the pan to the oven and turn on the grill function and grill for a couple more minutes.

Finally, arrange the apple pork sausage skewers onto the plates with some cucumber pepper salad on the side. They make a lovely summer meal or a Sunday lunch and they are just great for the BBQ party as well.

Enjoy!
