Mango sausage skewers as fun-food. They are in an "s" shape with a delicious curry sauce on a side.

Mango sausage skewers

Change an ordinary hot dog sausage look by twisting it (literally) with some fruits and vegetables. Your friends will be amazed by these delicious and fun mango sausage skewers. Pop them in a pan or even better on a grill and your lunch or dinner will be ready in a matter of minutes.

No more boring same old meal every day. Surprise everyone with this easy and flavourful dish. What might look like cheese, is actually mango. So leave the cheese and the hot dog bun out and you’ll get the mango sausage skewers, an amazing healthy dish.

Look at the shape! Isn’t it just beautiful? The twisting kind of a snake form gives the skewers a totally new look. Mango sausage skewers belong to the fun-food section. Not only you are going to love them but your children are going to love them, too.

There is something about food on a stick, right? It is simply fun! Moreover, it’s not exactly summer until you are grilling either meat, fruit or vegetable skewers. The grill is a summer’s synonym. That’s why skewers are perfect to feed a grill or to serve at a summer birthday party.

Furthermore, the great thing about skewers is, you can use almost any combination you like. Play with colours, flavours, shapes and textures. Almost every combination will turn out yummy. For inspiration, you can check these bacon skewers and the party skewers.

Four mango sausage skewers in a fun "S" form. The lovely green pepper makes a great combo and a great snack. Home-made fruity curry sauce on a side.
Mango and curry are a great combo.

To make everything even more delicious, add a home-made sauce to it. I always find that mango goes great with curry. Therefore, I made a sweet and fruity variation of a curry sauce. I already made it before for the CurryWurst recipe.

Making one yourself is easy and quick. It’s also satisfactory when serving it and everyone gets a smile on their face. And it doesn’t take much to impress. Making a delicious little thing is all you need. Oh, I really like this curry sauce and I know you are going to love it, too.

Ingredients for 4 mango sausage skewers:

  • 4 Wiener sausages (or hot dog sausage)
  • 1 mango (ripe, but still firm)
  • 1 green bell pepper

Ingredients for the fruity curry sauce:

  • 120 ml tomato purée
  • 100 ml apple sauce
  • 1-2 tsp of curry powder
  • ½ tsp of cinnamon
  • ½ tsp of sweet paprika
  • chili flakes (optional)
  • mango (leftovers, diced)

Begin with making the mango sausage skewers. Wash the bell pepper and cut it into bite-sized pieces. You can always pick any colour and type of pepper you like.

Then, peel the mango (even though some say you can eat the skin too) and slice it into 3 mm thin slices. Then cut the slices lengthwise into around 2 cm or sausage kind of wide strips. Additionally, save the smaller pieces of mango and leftovers (which are not suitable for the skewers) for the curry sauce.

Furthermore, with a long knife cut the sausages lengthwise into 3 mm thin slices. You should be able to get around 4 slices per sausage. At this point, you are ready to make your skewers.

Forming the fun mango sausage skewers

Like always, I used wooden skewers. Place one mango slice between two slices of sausage (mango should go all the length long) and start twisting it on the wooden skewer. Before every twist add a piece of green pepper. I managed to put one sausage (obviously in slices) on one skewer. So when the first two slices of sausage are on the skewer (in an „S“ shape), continue with the next two right on top of that. Repeat until all the mango sausage skewers are ready.

Make “s” shape snacks and surprise your friends and family.

Furthermore, prepare a grilling pan and a small saucepan. Preheat the grilling pan. In the small saucepan, combine all the ingredients for the curry sauce by adding first the diced mango, then the wet ingredients and then the spices. Stir and let it simmer on medium heat.

At the same time, brush the mango sausage skewers with some olive oil and place them on the grilling pan (or grill if you’re outside). Grill for 3-4 minutes on both sides or until you see that lovely “grill” colour. Wink.

Are you hosting a party? Fun food is always a hit. And so are going to be these mango sausage skewers. Also, for an extra kick, sprinkle them with curry powder and dip them into the fruity curry sauce. This is great for the whole summer, either as lunch, supper or snack idea.

Enjoy!
